Wild Shore 2019: Resident Composer ANNA PIDGORNA with CIPHER DUO and WILD SHORE TRIO
In 2019 Wild Shore New Music featured the music of Ukrainian-Canadian composer, artist, and vocalist Anna Pidgorna. Pidgorna, who recently completed her Ph.D. in music composition at Princeton University, combines traditional music making, visual arts, writing, and carpentry into her multimedia practice. Pidgorna completed a two-part residency culminating a newly commissioned work. During her initial two-week residency in Winter/Spring 2019, Pidgorna began her Wild Shore/Bunnell-commissioned work. In the Fall of 2019, Pidgorna returned to Alaska combining the Wild Shore Trio (flute/violin/piano) and violin-voice duo CIPHER Duo (acclaimed soprano Justine Aronson and violinist Sarah Goldfeather) to give the world premiere of Anna Pidgorna’s commissioned work.

Anna Pidgorna
Anna Pidgorna (b. 1985) is a Ukrainian born, Canadian raised composer, artist and vocalist, who combines everything from traditional music making, to visual arts, to writing, to carpentry in her multimedia practice. Characterized by “a balance of bold colour palettes, strong melodic profiles, and unexpected performative elements” (MusicWorks Magazine), her work traverses both acoustic and electronic realms. Anna was born in Ukraine and is heavily influenced by her heritage. Anna is also developing her own singing style which expands the folk singing style past its traditional boundaries. With her strong background in visual arts, Anna is bringing visual elements into her music.
A recipient of several awards (SOCAN Foundation Young Composers’ Awards, Boston Metro Opera Contempo Fest 2014), Anna is quickly rising on the contemporary music scene. Her music has been performed throughout Canada, as wells as USA, Italy, Austria, Germany, Ukraine, Poland, South Korea and Uruguay. Her piece The child, bringer of light received its premier at Carnegie Hall in New York, and Light-play through curtain holes represented Canada at the ISCM World New Music Days 2013 in Vienna. She has worked with So Percussion, the Gryphon Trio, aTonalHits, Thin Edge New Music Collective, and soloists Katelyn Clark, Paul Dwyer, Gamin, Janice Jackson, Rachel Mercer, Andrew Morrow, Olivia Steimel, Nick Tolle and Dobrochna Zubek. Her music has been commissioned by Toronto’s New Music Concerts, Soundstreams and 21C Festival.
Anna completed her undergraduate studies at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick in 2007 and a master’s degree at the University of Calgary in 2013. She has participated in two creative residencies at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta. Anna is currently pursuing a PhD in music composition at Princeton University.

Cipher, a voice and violin duo who will “blow your mind,” has given audiences "a collective chill" (New Classic LA) in their performances across California and New York City. The duo has been featured on New York City’s Classical radio station WQXR, and recently performed at Cornelia Street Cafe, The University of Southern California, UC Santa Barbara, The Factory in Pasadena, the Center for New Music in San Francisco, Roulette in Brooklyn as a part of the String Theories Festival, Cloud City in Brooklyn on the Permutation series, among others. Cipher has been awarded residencies at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute, where they have spent time retreating among the New Hampshire pines arranging even more music to play and sing together. Named after composer Kate Soper's piece of the same name, the duo has additionally premiered works by Brooklyn-based composers Sarah Goldfeather, Rebekah Driscoll and Eric Shanfield.
